Job Title: Data Management Intern

Reports to: MEAL and Grants Manager • Department: MEAL Department • Location: Narok County, Kenya (Maasai Mara – The Maa Trust Headquarters)

Role Purpose Statement

The Data Management Intern exists to support the MEAL Department in building robust, high-quality data systems that enable The Maa Trust to measure impact, improve program outcomes, and deliver evidence-based results aligned with the organization's strategic priorities. By ensuring accurate data collection, cleaning, analysis, and visualization, this role directly contributes to the organization's ability to address community challenges and demonstrate meaningful social impact.

Join The Maa Trust as a Data Management Intern and play a vital role in strengthening data systems that drive community impact across the Maasai Mara landscape. Over a one-year internship, you'll gain hands-on experience in data collection, analysis, and visualization while supporting evidence-based programs in conservation and social development. This is a unique opportunity to apply your skills in a mission-driven NGO making a real difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in updating data collection tools and templates (Excel trackers, KoboToolbox)
  • Support field data collection through surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews using digital tools
  • Clean, code, validate, and enter data into databases (Excel or SQL)
  • Upload field data into central databases and organize physical and digital records for easy retrieval
  • Assist in planning and executing Community Engagement Forums
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using Excel, Power BI, or Stata
  • Create dashboards and infographics for reporting using Power BI and Microsoft SQL
  • Support the design and maintenance of dashboards and visualization tools
  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly, annual, and donor reports through data aggregation and analysis
  • Identify and troubleshoot data quality issues
  • Support routine and ad hoc data quality checks and verification processes
  • Propose improvements to data storage and management systems
  • Participate in DMEAL trainings on tools and best practices
  • Provide logistical and documentation support during trainings and field exercises
  • Ensure data security and confidentiality protocols are followed

Know How

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of data analysis and visualization tools such as Power BI, SPSS, Stata, or R
  • Familiarity with mobile data collection tools like SurveyCTO, ODK, or KoboToolbox
  • Experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS) or SQL databases is a plus
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with sharp attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Kiswahili and Maa language skills are an added advantage

Problem Solving & Accountability

  • Identify data quality issues and implement corrective actions
  • Troubleshoot challenges in data collection and storage systems
  • Propose creative improvements to existing data management workflows
  • Adapt data collection approaches to field conditions in community settings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Data Science, Public Health, Social Sciences, Computer Science, or related field
  • Recent graduate (within the last two years)
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (required)
  • Knowledge of data analysis/visualization tools (Power BI, SPSS, Stata, R) is an added advantage
  • Familiarity with mobile data collection tools (SurveyCTO, ODK, KoboToolbox)
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (Kiswahili and Maa are an added advantage)
  • Passion for community development, conservation, and social impact
  • Experience with GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS) or SQL databases is an added advantage
